without a doubt, the saab 9000 is a packaging masterpiece. Its interior room is awarded large-car status by EPA standards, though its exterior measurements are more mid.size. And, except for the 4-door CDE sedan, 9000 series has station-wagon load capacy through an easy-loading hatchback door. those features alone would qualify the 9000 for some sort hall of fame. yet the 9000 also includes ground-breaking technology and a healthy dose of luxury.
Saab´s Trionic engine controls, used on the 9000´s 2.3l 4-cylinder engines, give these Saabs arguably the cleanest auto exhaust in the world. One test showed the Saab´s exhaust to be cleaner than ambient air in London. A new version of the 2.3l four, called the 2.3l LPT uses a turbocharger with relativly low boost pressure (5.6psi Vs 14psi for the 9000Aero), to bump output to 170bhp, compared to 147bhp for last year´s naturally aspirated four. This new base engine has almost no turbo lag or turbo kick (and no turbo badge), just broader range of power for the 9000CS.
Saab continues the 200bhp trubo 2.3-liter four CSE as well as a 225bhp version of the boosted engine for the 9000Aero sport sedan, but adds a 210bhp 3.0V6 as an alternative engine for the 9000CSE. Oddly enough, the naturally aspirated V-6 reaches its peak power at 6200rpm, compared to 5500rpm for the turbo -4. The turbo actually make more torque 238lb-ft vs 200lb-ft, and at lower revs; its torque peak comes at 1800rpm, compared to 3300rpm for the V-6.
All 9000s come with the usual luxury trapping and add some not-always-standard items, including a power sunroof.
For 1995, new features are daytime running lights, telescoping steering wheel, theft alarm with remote disarm, a premium Harmon Kardon audio system for the CDE and CSE/Aero and a new comfort suspension option.
