New Global Sales Structure by Swade on February 1, 2011 Saab Automobile AB creates new global sales organization with four regions New structure brings company closer to markets Saab Cars North America Announces New Executive Director Marketing TROLLHATTAN, Sweden, Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Saab Automobile AB today announced the introduction of a new global sales structure aimed at enhancing support and communication with its markets around the world. The announcement comes as Saab Automobile AB is embarking on its biggest-ever product offensive and expansion into several new markets around the globe. Effective February 1, Saab Automobile’s new global sales organization is divided into four regions, each led by a regional director responsible for market development, sales and aftersales. The regions identified in the new structure are: Americas, Nordic, Europe, and Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa. The Americas region includes the United States, traditionally Saab’s largest market, and will be led by Alan Ludwell, currently responsible for importer markets at Saab Automobile AB. Magnus Hansson will continue as regional director for the Nordics, where Sweden is the largest market. The Europe region will be led by Jonathan Nash, who leaves his position as managing director of Saab Great Britain. Over the course of the next few months Saab Automobile AB aims to announce a regional director for Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, where China will become the main focus. All regional directors will be based at company headquarters in Trollhattan, Sweden, where they will report directly to Saab Automobile AB Executive Director Global Sales & Aftersales, Matthias Seidl. Announcing the new structure, Seidl said: “This new organization gives individual markets a direct link with company headquarters through their regional organizations, creating shorter lines of communication and a more effective decision-making process. Getting this new structure in place is an important step as we focus on realizing the full sales potential of our markets and build on the recent sales momentum. “This year will be extremely important for Saab Automobile AB as we continue our biggest-ever product offensive with the introduction of exciting new vehicles like the Saab 9-4X crossover and the Saab 9-5 SportCombi. The new sales structure should help us make the most of the volume opportunities these products will create for us.” Saab Cars North America today also announces the addition of Mr. David Rooney as Executive Director Marketing for North America. David has a very extensive executive marketing background. He spent the duration of his career at Chrysler/DaimlerChrysler where he held several director level positions in areas such as customer relationship management, marketing and global communications, brand communications, media operations, events and cross brand marketing. David’s most recent accomplishment includes authoring a book entitled: The 31st Second to stimulate organizations and individuals to “think like Marketers” by developing client centered strategies and tactics focused on brand positioning, integrated communication and measurable business development. “We are very pleased to have David Rooney join our North American team in a very pivotal year for Saab Cars North America,” said Matthias Seidl, Executive Director Global Sales and Aftermarket.
  4. manche kann man nur ehrlich bedauern... weitere zahlen von saabsunited: Switzerland Saab has sold 35 cars in January, which is up 59% from the 22 sold in France in January 2010. January 2011 is not the moth for the S countries. Sweden, Spain and Switzerland are the only countries that have sold in January less than the monthly average of 2010. – France Saab has sold 53 cars in January, which is up 89% from the 28 sold in France in January 2010. Otoh, in January 2009 Saab sold 140 cars. The direction is right, but it is till a long way to go. – Germany I’ve just had a few emails come in telling me that there were 78 Saabs sold in Germany in January 2011. That’s a significant increase over the 40 sold in the same month last year, but still well down on what we’d like from what used to be Saab’s fourth largest market. It’s also noted that Saab’s sales numbers may not be published along with the rest of the market for this year in the general press release (they still appear in detailed reports). The reason for this is that Saab sold less than 1,000 cars in Germany last year (788, in fact), and apparently their press release must only cover marques that cross the 1K threshold. – Finland If I got it right from this article Saab has sold 53 cars in January in Finland. Thanks TuuSar for the reassurement!
  5. aktuell von saabsunited: Italy There were 122 Saabs sold in Italy in January, compared to 39 in the same month in 2010. Thanks Niklas! – Norway Sales in Norway were up 70% vs January last year (which was a very bad time, of course). There were 34 Saabs sold in Norway in January 2011. There were 20 Saabs sold in the same month last year. Saab 9-3: 27 Saab 9-5: 7 Thanks Per! – Belgium Patrick D tells me there were 260 Saab deliveries in Belgium in January. I don’t have a comparative figure to hand, but will be happy to add one. – Canada 11 Saabs found a new owner in January in Canada. If the progression keeps the pace, the forecast for the next three months are: 60, 333, 1830 http://www.saabsunited.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif – Portugal There were 24 Saabs sold in Portugal in January 2011 There were 3 sold last year, but the situation of Saab in Portugal last year wasn’t the best one. It seems like the market over there is doing better. – Spain Sales in January 43 (vs. 35 in January 2010) Saab has increased its sales by 22,9% compared with January 2010, while the whole Spanish market has been reduced by 23,5% Split: 9-3 26 9-5 17 – Ireland There were 25 Saabs sold in Ireland in January 2011 (13 were Saab 9-3s and 12 were Saab 9-5s). There were 6 sold in the same month last year. Thanks to OddG for the tip (and here’s a wonderful site for tracking Irish sales) –

ach gottchen, was war dann das?
  10. und es geht weiter, wieder von saabsunited: Saab Small market sales data – January 2011 by Red J on February 1, 2011 Sweden was the first big market reporting sales data, for the UK we will have to wait till Friday 4th of February, but till then we can post the sales data for the rest of Saab markets. Austria: Albeit preliminary Sales in January 29 (vs. 0 in 2010) No model-split information available by now. 29 may seem low, but it is in the levels of 2006, where Saab sold almost 500 cars in Austria vs. 102 in 2010. Netherlands Thanks to TIM Sales in January 214 (vs. 66 in 2010) Saab sold also 214 cars in January 2009 but the market share in 2009 was 0,38% slightly higher from the 0,28% from January 2011. Other markets will be added here when information is available.
  11. ach gottchen, es geht schon wieder los... hier aus saabsunited von heute: Saab Swedish sales data – January 2011 by Swade on February 1, 2011 It’s the first of the month, so it’s sales reporting time – and WOW!! I got this posted before anyone emailed me or dropped them in comments. Blogger FTW! First up is Sweden. —— Saab 9-3 There were 323 Saab 9-3s sold in Sweden in January, vs 100 last year. As it’s January, the YTD figure is irrelevant. Saab 9-5 There were 148 Saab 9-5s sold in Sweden in January, vs 107 last year. Total The total number of Saab vehicles sold in January was 471. —— Chats with contacts in Sweden earlier this month indicated they were looking for somewhere around 550-600 for the month. January-February were expected to be slow, but I’m sure they would have loved to have those extra 80 or so deliveries to reach that target – a sub-120g Saab 9-3 SportCombi might have helped there and there could well be people hanging out for that. The passenger car market was up 24% in January. BMW were up 100%. Ford were up 40%. Mercedes were up 60%. Hyundai were up 100%.

My love and passion for Saabs began in 1987. When I was about 13 years old, my father came home one day driving in a white Saab 9000i. It was a 1987 model, 2,0 liter 130 hp with burgundy velour interior. Today one might say that there is nothing special about that car at all, but in 1987, this was just something else. My family had had Volvos since I can remember and the change from a Volvo 244 GLT 1981 to a Saab 9000 1987 – well, let´s just say that it was one HUGE step. In the public eye in Sweden, Saabs had always been the standing in the shadow of Volvo, and to be honest, were quite heckled. With the 9000, Saab had made a car that had something of a halo-aura around it. In the late 80′s, it was THE car to have. For me, personally, I was struck by love immediately. Car-wise. In 1988 my father changed the 9000 for a 1988b model, with blue interior, and all the extras except leather. I remember sitting in the back of the car watching the interior, the dash and the various buttons with their glowing green symbols, and the ACC-panel with its small lamps besides the buttons. The SID which looked like it was taken directly from Star Wars. I made my mind up back then. Saab was the car for me. In 1992 when I got my drivers licence, I bought my first Saab. A brown 3-door 1980 900 2.0. It might not have been a beautiful color, but it was a great car. It was comfortable, great to drive, with great winter handling. My friends in their Volvos, well they were mostly gliding around in the snow with the rear wheels spinning. One of the best things (mechanically) with that car IMHO, was how the drivetrain was mounted. One day I had to change the clutch. Let me just say, changing a clutch on an OG 900, is like a dream: 1. Off with the bonnet. 2. Get some tools 3. Your butt on the radiator, your feet somewhere in the enginebay where you can find room. 4. Get the old clutch out. Put the new one in 5. Put the bonnet back on. What a car… In 1994 I got my first job and I needed a better car, so I bought my dreamcar (well almost). A 1986 9000 Turbo, Silverish blue. It had some rust on the doors, which I fixed, but there was more for this car to come since I crashed it in 1995 and made a total restoration as well as rebuilding it as a black 1990 Aero. I loved that car. http://images.saabsunited.com/DanielSaab9-5-300x200.jpgSince then I have had about 12-13 other Saabs, my current 2010 9-5 SC TiD GriffinSport being the latest and definitely NOT the last. I love this car as well. I have sometimes come to wonder why I have come to love this particular brand. Why Saab? I’m sure that there are a lot of cars that perform better in some areas on paper, but for some reason the heart and mind keeps sticking to Saabs. The only answer I have is that at least for me, Saabs have been the only cars that have perfomed best in the combined areas that I value the most. Sure, VW´s might be more spacious, Audis might have better build quality and material in the interiors, BMW might have better handling in the hands of an experienced driver, Volvos may have better reliability, and Toyotas may (a big may) be more fuel efficient etc etc. BUT in a Saab you get a combination of great performance in terms of all these features, a combination I just can’t find in any other car. VW’s are boring, Audis are just the same (and they have looks like milk cartons – they all look the same but in different sizes), BMW is too “look at me” for my taste and too conservative, Volvos are….well…. just boring too. Toyota? No thanks, not for me. Saab needs to be more Saab. The best comment I’ve heard from Victor Muller, one that Saab needs to adhere to: Say what you are. Do what you say. What I feel that Saab have lost though is the way it was DIFFERENT from other cars in the past. And I truly hope and wish that this thinking will gradually come back to how it was in the old heyday. The way the gauges looked, with green lights and orange needles, the compressed speedo. Controls for power-windows that you pressed down, when you wanted the window to go down, and lifted when you wanted the window to lift. At the same time other car maker had switches that you pressed forward to get the window down and backwards to get it up. Controls for heated seats that were like reostats that you turned with the tip of your finger instead of pushing a button over and over in order to get the right level of heating. Other cars had just an on/off switch. Doors that went down with the threshold integrated so that your pants or skirt didn’t get dirty getting in and out of the car. The way the rear spoiler on the OG 9-5 SC was designed in order to keep the rear window from not getting dirty. The clamshell bonnet that made engine bay access easy. The hatchback The list just goes on and on… Don’t get me wrong. I love the NG 9-5 and 9-4X, and if there had been a 9-5SC back in August I would have got one instead of my 2010 OG 9-5. BUT, I get a feeling that instead of going their own way – The Saab Way if you like – the main focus has been to make the cars as equivalent to the competition as possible, and in that process, they have kind of not looked the other way, and thought out of the box. It may be a result of GM being the overlord of the decisions being made (I truly believe it is – SW) It’s not that the cars don’t perform good enough. THEY DO. It’s not that the cars don’t look good enough. THEY MOST DEFINITELY DO. It’s just that the I feel a lack of the intuitive solutions of controls, instrument layout. The HUD is fantastic though!! It is my firm belief that people who buys Saabs do so because they want a car that is different and special (Intelligent if you like –which I personally think is a good description of what Saabs should be like. Kudos to Curvin O’Reilly) – and not just as good as the rest out there. We kind of take that for granted, we Saab drivers, and in some way we can live with the flaws as well. It’s just like any other lovestory: -You love her because she is just THAT. Special, different, to you just perfect. And the small flaws sometimes just makes you love her more… /Daniel
